Untitled

So Sunday afternoon brought us just short of 0.2 inches of rain — a bit over 0.3 inches of rain in 3 days. Yay! It was already a little bit green here, and now the grasses are taking off like crazy.

I have been forgetting to mention the cicadas, which have been in the trees doing their clicky thing for about 2 weeks now. Between them and the mockingbird, tea on the porch time is somewhat noisy these days.

And this year I have a squirrel coming up for peanuts again. I haven’t settled on a name for this squirrel; it’s not a TIBS, but it deserves a name!

An actual weather report

On Friday we had thundershowers in the afternoon, and we got 0.15 inches of rain from them. That actually watered everything.

Then we had some sprinkles yesterday afternoon; not enough to water anything, but just to let us know that Mother Nature hasn’t forgotten that we’re here.

And now: thunderstorms are moving in again.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a summer pattern?

Birds: have been seeing spotted towhees about; many hummingbirds of course; and the phoebes have built their nest in a not-so-good spot on top of an outdoor light on our side porch and mama has been sitting there quite a lot.

We haven’t seen the bobcat this week, but we also haven’t been looking toward the water at 5:50 pm, either; which is when he moved in last weekend.

I’m hearing thunder, so I’ll post this pronto.

Yesterday evening just before 6 pm, a bobcat at the birdbath:

He seems to have been here for a drink before, as he was very comfortable in the yard. He lapped up water for a few minutes, then took a rest in the shade:

Where he stayed for several minutes, staring toward the house, exactly where we were staring at him. I watched through the binoculars for a while & I’d have sworn he blinked at me.

Then he ambled off toward the hill, still very relaxed. I’m going to start watching for his return. These pictures are courtesy of our friend (& also visitor) Diane Vickers.

Today, cloudy, cool, breezy — mild pre-storm weather. I hope we get some rain from the anticipated thunderstorms!

More signs of spring

There’s a hummingbird outside out nook window, circling where the nectar feeder has always been. Alan thought he saw a hummer a day or two ago, but then we didn’t see it again, so we weren’t sure. Now there is no mistaking: we’re back in the sugar water business!

In my front garden the scorpion weed and some of the verbena has started blooming; those are among the volunteer wildflowers that I’ve encouraged because I like them and they both make ground cover over the gravel. Also blooming is the Persian rock cress I planted our first year in the house. All three of these flowers, plus the filaree that has been going strong for some time now (but which is on my “pull” list this year because of its seed spears) are purple. Not that that means anything, except that I have a predominantly purple garden.

We’ve had many days of big winds. It amazes me how quickly I tire of the wind! This morning is still, though, and earlier it was 41% humidity — very sweet and soft warm air, we were taking big gulps of it. Even with no clouds in the sky today, the overnight moisture condensed and was running into our barrels.

Spring rains

Which is a touch unusual, actually.

Yesterday evening we had a thunderstorm and there’s 0.15” of water in my rain gauge. That’s on top of the 0.2” inch of rain we received from the snow/rain combo that came through last week. Grass has been coming up all over the place; this should help it along nicely.

We have had generally warm and beautiful weather. The windy days haven’t been overwhelming — thumb’s up on that.

No hummingbirds yet but we’re watching for them now. Some years they arrive this early, and the phoebes have been here for several weeks now.

My currant bush was unfazed by the brief cold snap. The rest of my garden is waking up. Yeah, rain!

Yesterday pivoted: chilly and cloudy all day. Overnight snow: 2+ inches. And it’s still very lightly snowing.

Of course we’re not into warm weather every day yet; just March would have had you thinking so.

Forgot to mention that my currant bush is blooming. Well, it was; I’ll see what state it’s in later.

April Fool’s!

It’s a post!

We’re having a string of lovely days, with temperatures into the 70s. We have windy days, but so far it’s not been windy day after day in the relentless pattern we sometimes get in the spring. Let’s keep our fingers crossed on that one.

We saw our first mockingbirds of the year at the water dish this morning. (Which means my catling Cosmo saw his first mockers ever, and boy was he excited about that.)

The phoebes have paired up and are starting a nest in the phoebe condo. That’s as of today too.

Maybe Mother Nature is just playing April Fool’s on us with all this bird bliss going on, but I hope not!

Summery

Way improved from the 3 days of snow-mist we had through Saturday. At least we got a bit of moisture from the three gloomy days, and had a nice reminder of how spoiled we have become, whining when our blue skies disappear for three whole days!!

Warm, clear, still. Completely beautiful, in fact.

The phoebes returned (or at least, we saw them) about 10 days ago. On Saturday (the last & gloomiest of the three), two phoebes were huddled in the phoebe condo. They did not seem any happier about the gray skies and snow-mist than we were. Today they’re out & about, calling.

The western bluebirds are also very present right now; they’ve been coming closer to the house. My currant bush has been leafing out. I think it’s time for pruning already. How quickly this winter went!

Snowing

Actually it snowed overnight and we had about an inch on the ground early this morning. As the day warmed up a touch, snow in all the exposed areas melted into the ground. The snow continued falling, so that it was a rare cloudy and dank day. Not much water involved, just dampening all the ground and roads. But now the snow is accumulating again, since the temperatures have dropped.

This is actual weather. I thought maybe I should post it!

That season again

Wind, although not so bad today. Friday past was miserable with wind. This year, happily, our windy days have been having less windy days in between.

Phoebes flitting around the house Saturday morning, but no songs just yet. (Well, keep in mind I am not outside that much just now; so who knows, really?!

And a rock squirrel expecting peanuts this morning during tea on the porch time. He took four from my hand, quite as if he already knew how. Maybe... SIBS? For Second Incredibly Bold Squirrel?

It’s that season again!

Pleasant day

Merely breezy, and sunny with scattered clouds.

Yesterday morning, and Saturday, and last Thursday, however, were that dreaded early spring windy. The kind that makes us want to go hide. (I’m just referring to us Happy Campers, there; I’m pretty sure many of our neighbors are made of sterner stuff.)

It’s snowing in a desultory fashion. Something has been coming down for hours now, but there’s no accumulation of any kind. It doesn’t even look damp outside. Just clouds galore and something going on in the air. Sort of odd, actually.

Actual weather

Fog & clouds moved in yesterday afternoon. Overnight some very light snow. Half an hour ago, what sounded like rain. Then it looked like sleet. Now it is clearly snow again, which makes the most sense, as it’s only 18° out there.

No more rain fell the other day, by the way. The early morning teaser was all we received.

It’s a Small World UPDATED

We’re in the fog this morning, and there’s frost on the ground, shrubs, & trees. At 7:45 am, a whopping 26°.

This time last year we were finally back in the 20s again after flirting with 30 below.

So, today is better!

UPDATE: Alan thinks what I called frost is actually a very very light snow.

Weather reports will be sparse for a while.

I broke my left wrist this past Tuesday, falling on a patch of ice. Will have surgery on Monday. Prognosis good, but typING is tricky.

Especially since my kitten keeps trying to assist.

January Rain

It’s been raining off & on all night. It’s raining now. Yard & driveway are darkened and damp looking, but I don’t see any puddles, so it’s not raining that much. So far.

Still, it’s nice to know the water devas haven’t forgotten about us, but were merely letting us dry off a bit.

Way behind the times

We had a couple weeks of melting, mud & drying out after Christmas. Then we had some snow this Sunday past. It looked like it could be a serious storm, but here at Happy Camp we scored only an inch of accumulation, enough to cover all the exposed dirt but not enough to make much mud this week. Yay!

I probably have lots more to catch up on, too, but I came down with a post-holiday cold & don’t have the focus to remember what all I’ve missed. I very much hope that was a coherent sentence, just not sure right now.

But I do know I’ve been putting off weather blogging because I got behind. So now I’m not behind.
