It’s been essentially a month since we’ve had any significant precipitation. A few times it sprinkled for a few minutes, but nothing has really watered us since about a week before the HOA meeting.
Well, our best chance seems to be today: heavier clouds, and it was definitely raining out near the Manzanos an hour ago. Asking for your help in sending rain our way!!!
On the bird front, I’ve been falling in love with the tufted titmouse. We have a couple who come to the birdbath just outside the guest room and drink. They are so little and gray, and full of so much personality. They take turns — one drinks and the other stays in the tree; then they switch.
We’ve also had an orange-crowned warbler visit the birdbath a couple of times recently. That’s a new bird for me. So far we’ve only seen one at a time, so I don’t know how prevalent they are here.
The hummingbirds are winding down, but the ones who are here are more jealous of the feeders than ever!
Speaking of hoarding sugar water, we’ve been getting into the 40s overnight quite consistently. I actually had to wear a sweater for several hours the other day, it took that long for the house to warm up in the sun. On the other hand, while most days are still warm, we seem to be over the heat. I like the crispness; apples from the Manzano orchards must be just around the corner.
Oh, speaking of apples: Mountainair is awash in peaches this week. Scott took over the early September run to the orchard in Colorado where some local women had been ordering peaches for several years. Those who want the super-yummy heavenly peaches pre-ordered earlier in the summer, so the orchard would reserve the right amount for Mountainair. Peach delivery was last Saturday, and now we are eating peaches galore, making peach cobbler, and freezing some for use in the winter. Truly ripe peaches are such a joy, and we are very lucky to have a source, and to have Scott be willing to coordinate the ordering and delivery. Yay, Scott!
All together now: “Puh-leeze rain!”
